Cataract Surgery Referral Clinic

What are the assessments for cataract surgery referral in the practice?

Andrew D. PriceYou will be specifically assessed with a view to referring you to a specialist private clinic for non-NHS cataract or surgery, it is possible to combine this procedure with an aim of removing or reducing your need for spectacles or contact lenses afterwards. I choose to co-manage patients with specific ophthalmic surgeons/clinics in Wales and North-West England who will make the final decision on your suitability for treatment. Your visit(s) to my clinic will provide comprehensive data on whether this form of eye surgery is a possibility and information on the various surgical options and providers.

Post-surgery appointments, even routine follow-ups, are a vital part of the care involved. If you and your surgeon/clinic are happy with your progress, routine follow-up visits can take place in my clinics if appropriate.

Cataract surgery

What is a cataract? - A cataract is formed when the eye’s natural internal lens begins to harden and become cloudy, impairing vision. This happens due to a build-up of proteins clumping together and the eye’s tissues breaking down. A cataract can only be treated with cataract surgery, which is where the eye’s lens is removed in a simple, 15 minute procedure, and replaced with an artificial lens.

This artificial lens can either be monofocal or multifocal, depending on whether you want to achieve freedom from reading glasses, as well as correcting your distance vision. Monofocal lenses provide focus for distance vision only (although you can select another level of vision if you prefer), while multifocal lenses provide focus for both near and distance vision. Sometimes your surgeon can aim to give you 'monovision' where one eye is corrected for distance and the other for near, it is vital you have the opportunity to judge if this is suitable for you before surgery, this can be done easily as part of the Cataract Referral Clinic. The 'target' prescription is then known in advance and is provided to the surgeon.

Purpose of your cataract surgery referral assessment

Your pre-referral assessment is designed to obtain a lot of vital information for you and a potential surgeon/clinic to enable informed decisions.

Exams, data and discussions can include:

  • Providing objective information to aid your choice of surgeon/clinic
  • Is your prescription stable for refractive surgery
  • Your expectations
  • Monovision discussion and pre-surgery assessment
  • Past eye history
  • Medical history
  • Internal eye health with optional photography
  • Eye measurements
  • Microscope exam of the front of the eye
  • Dry eye, lid and ocular surface assessment and therapy to improve treatment success if needed
  • Clinical discussions between myself and your choice of surgeon/clinic

Other eye surgeries that you can be referred for

Corneal Collagen Cross-Linking can strengthen and stabilise the cornea and is sometimes indicated for conditions like keratoconus or corneal ectasia to reduce the likelihood of progression.

Blepharoplasty is a procedure to tighten the skin and soft tissue on the eye lids and may be indicated for drooping, sagging or puffy lids that affect vision or for purely cosmetic reasons.

Eyelid lumps, bumps, cysts and chalazions although common should always be identified, observed and if necessary, or for purely cosmetic reasons, be treated.

What are the charges?

Because there are so many conditions and alternatives for treatment it is not possible to provide accurate charges in general information such as this. I will be able to give you some indication as I know more about you, especially at your appointment. I can even give you some approximate ideas by email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. and then more specific information when we meet.

What do I do next?
